Smith Standing Military Press

The Smith standing military press is an exercise that works your shoulder muscles. You do it while standing up inside a Smith machine, which helps hold the bar steady. It also uses your arm and back muscles. Because the bar moves in a straight line, it can be easier to learn than other presses, but you still need to stand strong and hold your body tight.

How to Perform

  1. 1Stand with your feet as wide as your shoulders and keep your knees bent a little bit.
  2. 2Hold the bar with your hands a little wider than your shoulders. Your palms should face forward.
  3. 3Unhook the bar and bring it down until it is at the same height as your shoulders.
  4. 4Push the bar straight up until your arms are reaching all the way up.
  5. 5Stop for a short moment at the top, then slowly lower the bar back down to your shoulders.
  6. 6Do this again for as many times as you need.
