Dumbbell Side Lying One Hand Raise

This exercise works the shoulder muscles, known as the deltoids. You lie on your side and lift a dumbbell with one arm until it is at shoulder level. This movement strengthens the shoulder and improves balance.

Dumbbell Side Lying One Hand Raise demonstration

How to Perform

  1. 1Lie down on your side with your legs straight. Rest your head on your bottom arm.
  2. 2Hold a dumbbell in your top hand. Turn your palm so it faces the floor.
  3. 3Keep your arm straight and lift the weight up until it is as high as your shoulder.
  4. 4Stop for a second at the top, then slowly lower the weight back to where you started.
  5. 5Do this for the right number of times, then turn over and do the same on the other side.
